Wi Picnic

Yes ! Jodrell Side WI had a meeting in August ! It was actually an outside picnic and in true WI style we all brought our own sandwiches, cakes and chairs. The weather for the afternoon picnic was warm and sunny. We sat in the field belonging to Goostrey Scout Hut. The WI bunting was out in force as were our members. Everyone was treated to a lovely glass of fizz and we were off! President Pat Alston opened the meeting with much ‘joie de vivre’ as we celebrated our first meeting for a very long time with plenty to catch up on. Of course a rendition of Jerusalem would have been the icing on the cake - though not this time ! ( I reckon The Crown clientele would have thought we had all gone slightly mad ! ! ) Many ladies paraded their beautifully made and decorated summer hats for our competition of ‘best hat’. A very original and completely homemade hat was decided as the clear winner. There was such a great energy of pleasure throughout the whole afternoon. I think this was just what many people needed to kickstart and give confidence for moving forward, despite the pandemic. I hope everyone went home with a renewed vigour. Hopefully we can now return to our meetings every 2nd Tuesday in the month ( Goostrey Village Hall ) and continue to enjoy the very essence of WI life - a solidarity of all women who want to embrace life in the best way possible.

Tuesday 14th September 2021:

Tiger Muffin Soap

Our September speaker was a Soap Maker ( not a maker of soaps for TV ) - Tiger Muffin Soaps.

Mathew entertained us with the history of how soap became a cleanser for the skin over years and he demonstrated how he made his soaps using natural products and essential oils. We were treated to the smell of some lovely fragrances during his presentation.

A number of members have been busy knitting scarves for a homeless charity. Their goal was to knit enough scarves to cover the diameter of the Jodrell Bank dish. We are happy and proud to say that this was achieved. As you can imagine, there are lots of scarves now going to the homeless in time for winter. Well done ladies.

The theme for our meeting was ‘Love Our Planet’. We are doing our best to help the environment in any way we can. Members brought old toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss containers to be recycled. A member of the committee will drop these off at the local collection box ( Goostrey Scout Hut) where they are collected by terracycle.com. They recycle them by shredding and melting them down to make plastic pellets to be used in new plastic products.

We also had a good discussion by completing an eco quiz on how we can make adjustments to our everyday actions in our homes and garden. Many members are already very eco friendly but the quiz highlighted how there are also many extra additions that we can do to help save our planet.

'The Dark Lady of Gawsworth'

Tuesday 9th November 2021:

AGM & Talk on 'The Dark Lady of Gawsworth' Ben Alexander

'Jodrell Side WI had their meeting on 9th November. This meeting was also our Annual General

Meeting.

President Pat Alston opened the meeting and welcomed all members. We listened and joined in with a choir recording of Jerusalem.

Our Speaker Ben Alexander was introduced and we had a very interesting talk on a lady from Cheshire called Mary Fitton, who it is said wrote many of Shakespeare’s Sonnets. Mary was known as ‘The Dark Lady of Gawsworth’. Ben’s talk was very well researched and evidenced based that gave an entirely different perspective on the meanings of Shakespeare’s Sonnets.

After a break for tea and as usual great homemade cake President Pat opened the General Meeting.

The secretary Pat Ingram presented the Annual Report and Treasurer Jean Webb presented the Financial Report.

The Committee were presented and all WI members voted for a President. I’m happy to say Pat Alston was elected for a 3rd year . Pat has done a brilliant job at keeping everyone informed with her interesting news letters throughout the lockdowns and is very inspirational. A third term as President is such a positive for Jodrell Side WI.

We also have a great Website - if you feel that you would like to come and join us at WI have a look and see what we have to offer members

https://www.jodrellsidewi.org.uk

I cannot believe that we have again been limited to so few meetings this year ! The next meeting on 14th December will be our Christmas Party! It seems such a long time since last one !

Here’s hoping that the pandemic doesn’t lay claim to this years Christmas celebrations !

Happy Christmas from all at Jodrell Side WI.
